AI and Our Artwork

We believe you should know how the gear you wear was made. So here it is, plainly.

How the artwork is made

Designs at The Grim Stitchery begin with AI image generation. Where they go from there depends on the piece.

At the simplest, a generated image is cleaned, corrected and prepared for print, sometimes with a slogan set and placed by hand. Even that is not a straight lift. Shapes get fixed. Shadows get fixed. Whole areas come out with the wrong texture and get cut away and rebuilt when everything around them is worth keeping. Colours are corrected. Type is chosen, kerned and positioned by eye.

At the other end, a design is built. Generated elements, our own drawn and constructed pieces, and hand-assembled composition all cut together into something that did not exist in any single output. The machine supplies parts. The design is ours.

Thirty years of design work sits behind every one of them. Nothing goes to press untouched. The machine proposes. The human decides, and the human is the one who has to live with it.

No design leaves the workshop unless we would wear it ourselves. That rule has not changed and it will not.

Promotional imagery

Some of the scenes and banners we post are created using AI image generation. Where that is the case, the image carries a visible mark saying so. You will not have to guess and you will not have to look for it.

Product photography and garment mock-ups on this site show the actual blanks we print on, supplied by our fulfilment partner. Where a promotional image sets a design in a scene, the real mock-up is shown alongside it. What you see is what arrives.

What we do not do

We do not create artwork depicting real, identifiable people, whether living or dead. Our monsters are our own.

We do not use AI to fabricate reviews, testimonials, or customer photographs.

We do not let a generated image make a promise the garment cannot keep.

The words

Copy on this site is written and edited by a human. Where AI tools assist with drafting, the result is reviewed, rewritten and signed off by us before it is published. Anything you read here, we stand behind.

Why we tell you this

Because you asked, or because you were about to. AI-generated artwork is now everywhere and most of it is unmarked. We would rather say it out loud than have you wonder.
